Black and White

On the near eve of the Blue and White Weekend at PSU, I'm thinking black and white. . .I've been toying with photos for the past few days of my vaca and I realize how amazing things look in black and white.

Maybe it's laziness on my part as I don't have to worry about red-eye, etc. Maybe it's a rookie mistake. . .Everything seems more artistic in black and white.

I suppose it's because all the distraction of color is removed. (That was deep wasn't it?) Hahaha!

At any rate, last weekend I had an interesting conversation with my second-youngest sister. . .

D, T, & Nel - T driving - which is scary enough. . .On a mission to Walmart. . .

T - "I remember all the stuff you told me when I was younger."

D - Nervous laugh. . .(I kept it PG - so far as I can remember)

T - "I remember that one time you told me about some STD. You got your 'ass beat' for that one."

*For the record, I have no recollection and I certainly don't ever remember my Mother or Father giving me an "ass beating" EVER.

T - "I remember when you tried to tell me Santa wasn't real."

*For the record, I remember this. . .T and I are about 4 years apart. I should have gotten "my ass beat" for this one.

T- "There I was hanging my stocking on the fireplace, asking Santa to bring Dad home and you came in the room and said "Santa isn't real'. . .Mom came flying in the room and grabbed hold of you. . ."

T - "I was like what the hell, does this mean Dad isn't coming home for Christmas?"

All I can say about this is, I asked God, Santa, the Easter Bunny, and the Tooth Fairy to bring Dad home. . .Ever since I could slap a Gopher for Groves Safety sticker on my kitchen table booster seat. . .

Another Stellar Moment in Greencastle PA Graffitti

T - "At least they spelled whore correctly."

I did post this earlier - at the time of first finding via Blackberry. . .This pic is prob more clear. As if you needed a clearer version of the manifestation of some 15-year old's angst. . .We've all be there. . .maybe not quite this far. . .

I do wonder if Turds and Satan are friends? Acquaintances at least?

Enoch Brown Park #49

Typically, I try to keep people and faces to a minimum on this blog because I don't want it to become akin to a "mySpace" or "facebook" page where it's all party pics and superficial stuff. I wanted it to be about my domestic life. . .Not about my job, not about me-centric pick good photos of me all lipglossed and fab (hahaha). . .
It's definitely me-centric as I'm the narrator but I'd like to keep the focus on the me in terms of activity, projects, thoughts, and my friends and relations. . .
At any rate, occasionally, I have a pic that includes people and faces and I'm not completely opposed to posting it, if it has significance, point, or purpose.
Here C n T dismount the See-Saw in Enoch Brown Park. There were no kids here the time we visited. There's clearly a playground and a pavilion, and charcoal pits for grilling. . .
At first it seemed weird to me that a playground and picnic place would be erected at the site of such horrific events involving children. But after having walked through the quiet woods and seeing the monuments, it doesn't seem that strange. It seems to close the circle. Once children learned and played. . .now they do again. . .
However, If I were a parent, I'd use caution with the monkey bars, they shake like the dickens!
BTW, I don't know what a dickens is but my Grandmother uses that phrase and I know it means "moderate to severe." On a scale of 1 -10. . .10 being most extreme. . .dickens is a 5-7.5. And this lady knows what she's talkin' 'bout!
And I didn't feel well but I do regret not getting on the swings!

Enoch Brown Park #55

Geo-caching without GPS. . .needle in a haystack of "bushwhack." (The clue said minor bushwhacking is necessary to locate the cache. T pointed out we had nothing to bushwhack with. . .Thanks Captain Obvious, we also had no GPS! lol)

We returned home empty handed, but I'm so glad to have spent time with C, T, & Nel. I'm also glad to learn about Enoch Brown and the history of the area. All in all, a pretty great weekend! Thanks T & Nel!! Great food, great fun, good rest, great company. Exactly what I love and needed.

Enoch Brown Park #52

I like how the obelisk is still surrounded by leafless "barren" trees. Yet, the green grass and lower vegetation offers hope and promise of spring and life and rebirth. I'm glad the sky was overcast. Typically, I take photos best when the sky is brilliant blue. This grayish sky is reminiscent of the monument itself and casts the appropriate somber tone.

Our Excellent "Adventure" IV

This memorial recounts the history of Enoch Brown, his pupils, and the significance of the event/site.

Enoch Brown Park - Greencastle PA

A little chilling. T was right. The place is a little creepy. She described the feeling as "heavy." I wasn't sure if it was just the quiet, save for the unseen woodpecker. . .or some other-worldly presence. Either way, I never would have known about this place or it's history before the Geo-caching adventure.

Our Adventure Part III

Enoch Brown Park. Enoch Brown was the schoolmaster who reportedly plead with the Lenape warriors to take him and spare the school children - to no avail. This monument memorializes the events.

I love these delicate little flowers. . .Springing up among all the detritus on the forest floor.

Our Excellent "Adventure" Part II

Since we were running short on time, we decided we knew the general vicinity of the "prize." While Nel waited "patiently" with the GPS at the house, C, T, and I would head to the park and see what we could see. T assured us the park wasn't big and "there wasn't much there."

What was there? Acres and Acres of woods!!!! The stupid "treasure" could have been anywhere!!!

The park was another reason I agreed to this little adventure. It was the site where some Lenape Indian warriors scalped a school master and his pupils. T assured me it was "creepy." I love the macabre so that sealed the deal for me.

Our Excellent "Adventure"

Ok. . .This might sound a little dorky but we tried to go geo-caching this afternoon. I KNOW so not me right? Our friend Nel said she wanted to try it. Plus she was itching to get a hand held GPS. C had played somestupidvideogame the night before and most of the morning until his hand was literally swollen. No shit. I got up at 6 AM and he was playing!!!

So it seemed to me, getting outside was a great idea.

Plus, Nel assured me there were places close by that didn't require a lot of skill or hiking. We all know, I lack skill and typically lack appropriate attire (I had with me this trip a pair of 5 inch patent stilettos and a pair of flip flops).

So off to Walmart we headed for a GPS for Nel and a backpack for me (no designer handbags in the woods. . .And I needed somewhere to stash Kleenex, water, camera, Blackberry, and Vick's Inhaler).

Return to T's victorious on all accounts. . .Just needed to plug the coordinates in the GPS. . .

It was not that simple, nor was figuring out what all those damned straps on the backpack were for. I miss the days of the 2 pouch LL Bean (which I still have but never when needed).

We had more than our share of difficulties getting the coordinates in the GPS. It took hours to figure out the upload process. . .And we were running out of time before C and I had to head home. . . .

Spring in South PA #33

Anyone who is serious about their "turf" finds dandelions menacing. How can you truly hate such an industrious, tenacious, cheery little flower. I know, I know, the tap root is a bitch and those fluffy little seed heads disperse in a remarkably efficient manner. . .I still love them as much as when I was a kid. Of course, I don't have any grass to care for either. . .

Rural America #30

I had the opportunity to watch the evening and the morning farmer/cow routine. Each time, they "stowed" and extra bale of hay in this shed. It made me think of when I worked at Wendy's in high school and we always restocked the "condiment bar" and the salad bar veggies before we closed in the evenings! hahaha.

Rural America #28

T says sometimes the water trough is empty (I noticed the label said it has a 300 gallon capacity!). She said sometimes she uses the pump and hose to refill it. Prior to that, she carried buckets full of water from the kitchen sick to the trough. WTF? Imagine how many trips it would take to fill a 300 gallon trough with a bucket. Glad she learned how to use the pump!

The barn at T's house. . .

Rural America #22

This guy seemed quite curious, if not a little belligerent. He approached the fence and seemed rather confrontational and mouthy. The fence consists of a low, thin wire. It was not electric. Why they just don't walk over it, I don't know. I kept my distance. They are big animals!

Rural America #21

This is Momma Cow and she had a calf not too far away. She kept a watchful eye on me.

Spring Sky #20

I'm not sure if that "ring" would be considered a flaw by a trained photographer, but I rather like it.

Rural America #18

The view from sister T's kitchen window. . .Happy cows (for now). . .Apparently this area is reserved for new Mom cows and their calves (what is a female cow? A heifer, I think?)

Weekend and Another Week

Some stuff went down at work last week that was not good. It really irritated me on a personal level, which is not something I enjoy. At any rate, this space isn't really about work and while I worked some this weekend I also got the opportunity to see my sister. Getting outta' dodge was good for me and even though I'm still relatively miserable with C's virus, I feel rather clear and level headed about the week ahead. I'm ready to embrace the challenges, run hard, and make sure I do everything I possibly can to get the job done well.
